Brown Travel

Health and Safety

The health, safety, and security of Brown’s travelers is our priority.

Travel Abroad Accident and Sickness Insurance

Brown students, faculty, and staff are covered under the University’s blanket travel abroad accident and sickness insurance policy when traveling outside the United States on Brown-related Travel at no additional cost to them.

Please note, this insurance policy is not a replacement for your required health insurance and does not cover routine care; it is a supplemental policy to cover accidents/illnesses while traveling outside the U.S. on Brown-related travel.

Accompanying Spouses and Dependents

Spouses and dependents of Brown faculty, staff, and students are covered under this policy in matters concerning health safety, and security and risk management only when accompanying Brown travelers on international, Brown-related Travel. It is the responsibility of the Brown staff, faculty, or student to note the name of their spouse and/or dependent(s) who may be accompanying them in TravelSafe. This coverage does not apply to domestic travel.

War Risk Exclusions

Some countries may be excluded from coverage under Brown’s travel abroad accident and sickness insurance due to war risk exclusions. These exclusions apply to regions experiencing war, civil unrest, or similar hostile conditions. Travel to such destinations may not be covered by the University’s insurance policy. Additional approvals and requirements are needed to travel to these countries, such as Safety Plan reviews and approval, and the purchase of war risk riders to reinstate restricted insurance coverage.

The current list of War Risk Exclusion countries include; Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Iraq, Israel including the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, & Yemen.

Activating Program Benefits

Registering your University-related travel in TravelSafe will activate the program benefits, including emotional/mental health support and coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation along with other valuable and relevant information related to health and security.

If you need to obtain medical care outside of the United States or have pre-departure safety and/or health-related questions, be sure to contact Brown's partner for travel services, International SOS. They will guide you to a medical or mental health provider within the plan so you will not incur any out of pocket expenses such as copays or deductibles. You can download the International SOS Assistance App as well as print International SOS wallet cards directly from the International SOS portal.

To obtain a verification letter for the coverage through International SOS, please email TravelSafe@brown.edu for instructions.

Vaccinations and Other Considerations

Make an appointment with your doctor or local travel clinic to determine what, if any, vaccinations you may need or to devise a travel health plan to consider your health and safety profile during your travels.

The Brown Medicine Travel Clinic is a great resource in the Providence area. You can also check the CDC's Travelers' Health website for important health-related travel notices.
